TRIMETHYL PHOSPHITE: IS 17412:2020

BIS REGISTRATION FOR TRIMETHYL PHOSPHITE: IS 17412:2020

INTRODUCTION

The Bureau of Indian Standards has included trimethyl phosphite in Compulsory Registration Scheme II of Schedule-II under the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018, as per the Trimethyl Phosphite (Quality Control) Order, 2022. As per this directive, registration under the CRS scheme and the mandatory use of the Standard Mark for trimethyl phosphite in accordance with IS 17412:2020 are required. This directive, issued by the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, was officially published on April 5, 2022, in the gazette. It will come into effect on the one hundred and eighty-first day (181st Day) following its publication in the gazette.

IS 17412:2020 outlines the specifications, sampling method, and testing procedures for trimethyl phosphite. Trimethyl phosphite, with the chemical formula P(OCH3)3, is an organophosphorus compound. It presents as a clear liquid with a potent odor. As the most basic phosphite ester, it serves dual roles as a ligand in organometallic chemistry and as a reagent in organic synthesis. Produced from phosphorus trichloride, it readily oxidizes into trimethyl phosphate. Trimethyl phosphite finds application as a mild desulfurization reagent in organic synthesis, particularly in the preparation of tetrathiafulvalene derivatives.
